A newly disclosed Linux kernel vulnerability, dubbed RefluXFS, has brought renewed attention to the risks posed by long-standing flaws hidden deep inside operating system code. According to security researchers, the vulnerability remained undetected for nearly nine years before its discovery and could allow a local attacker to escalate privileges and gain root access on affected Linux systems.
Unlike remote code execution vulnerabilities, RefluXFS requires an attacker to already have local access to the target machine. However, in multi-user environments, development servers, CI/CD infrastructure, container hosts, or systems where an initial compromise has already occurred, this type of vulnerability can significantly increase the impact of an attack by allowing a standard user account to obtain full administrative privileges.
Researchers estimate that millions of Linux systems could be affected due to the vulnerability's long presence within the kernel. Because the flaw has existed across multiple kernel generations, many enterprise deployments may still be running vulnerable versions until vendor patches are applied.
